Kelly's Winter Training Tip
Motivation Gets You Started. Consistency Gets You Results.
As the temperatures drop and the mornings get darker, it's easy to wait for motivation to strike before heading to the gym, pool, or group fitness class.
The problem? Motivation isn't always reliable.
Some days you'll feel energised and ready to train. Other days you'll be tired, busy, stressed, or simply not in the mood. If we only exercise when we feel motivated, our fitness journey can quickly become a stop-start cycle.
That's why I encourage our members to focus on consistency rather than motivation.
Consistency means showing up regularly, even when you don't feel like it. It doesn't mean every workout has to be your best workout. Some days you might smash a strength session, while other days a short walk, swim, or mobility session is enough.
The key is maintaining the habit of movement.
One of the simplest strategies is to schedule exercise into your week just like any other important appointment. Research shows that people are more likely to stay active when physical activity becomes part of their routine rather than a decision they have to make each day.
Another effective approach is the "5-minute rule." On days when motivation is low, commit to just five minutes of activity. Often, getting started is the hardest part. Once you're moving, you'll frequently find the energy to continue. Even if you don't, you've still honoured the habit.
I also encourage members to lower the pressure on themselves during winter. Progress isn't about perfection. Missing one workout won't derail your goals. The important thing is getting back on track at the next opportunity rather than waiting for the "perfect" time to restart.
Remember, fitness is not built through occasional bursts of motivation. It's built through hundreds of small decisions repeated over time.
This winter, don't ask yourself, "Am I motivated today?"
Instead ask, "What's one thing I can do today to stay consistent?"
Your future self will thank you for it.

Discover The Benefits Of Tai Chi

When many people think of exercise, they picture intense workouts, heavy weights or high-energy classes. Tai Chi offers something a little different.
Often described as "meditation in motion," Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise that combines slow, flowing movements with breathing and focus. Originally developed as a martial art, it is now widely recognised for its health and wellbeing benefits, particularly for improving balance, mobility, coordination and confidence in movement.
One of the great things about Tai Chi is that it is suitable for almost everyone. The movements can be adapted to different abilities, making it an excellent option for older adults, those returning to exercise, or anyone looking for a lower-impact way to stay active.
Research has shown that regular Tai Chi practice can help reduce the risk of falls, improve balance and support both physical and mental wellbeing. It also encourages mindfulness, helping participants slow down, focus on the present moment and manage everyday stress.
At Fastlane, we regularly see another important benefit of Tai Chi—the sense of community it creates. Participants often stay for a chat after class, share a coffee together, and enjoy the friendships that develop through regularly seeing familiar faces. Those social connections are just as important for wellbeing as the physical activity itself.
As we move through the colder winter months, Tai Chi provides a wonderful opportunity to keep moving, maintain strength and balance, and stay connected with others in a supportive environment.
Whether you're looking to improve mobility, build confidence, meet new people or simply try something new, Tai Chi could be the perfect place to start.

Strong & Stable Into Winter
As winter arrives I feel it comes with a few reminders of the ways that coming to exercise class can be of benefit: exercising warms your body & lubricates your joints, with some good company, a cuppa or some good music it'll warm your soul too :) In classes, you're also practicing balancing in a safe environment so you're prepared for negotiating winter puddles and surfaces. Yes, we all need to practice and stimulate our balance system to keep it ticking over.
